1. The Free Practice Test
The Free Practice Test is provided by GED Testing Service, the same organization that writes and administers the real tests and the GEDReady tests. As you use this website, it is important to be able to view the Free Practice Test quickly. because its screens are just like those on the real test. To bring up the FPT, click here. Now you can move back and forth between this website and the FPT. Once the FPT comes up, choose English, Social Studies and "View online." Then click the "Next" button to move to "Question 1 of 10".
How to Connect. Go to the main Free Practice Test screen, here.
- The first time you use it, accept the "terms and conditions."
- On the right side, look for "FREE ENGLISH PRACTICE TEST" and then below that for "Social Studies."
- You can either view the test online or download it to a Windows or Mac computer.
- I have links to the online version at key locations in this website.
- You may want to bookmark the test on your own computer, or to download it and bookmark access to that.
Nine Questions. Use the "Start," "Next" and "Previous" buttons to access the nine questions on the test.
- Questions 1, 2 and 3 are based on three pages of material. You read the table and text in the left panel. The right panel changes with each question. Notice that these questions use the "multiple-choice" answer format.
- Questions 4, 5 and 6 are based on three different pages of material. Notice that Question 5 uses the "type-in-a-box" answer format.
- Question 7 uses the "hot-spot" answer format. The material is used only for this question, so there are no right or left panels.
- Questions 8 and 9 both use the "drag-and-drop" answer format. Each question uses a different set of material, so there are no right or left panels.
The Buttons. There are several buttons at the top and bottom of the screen:
- (1) The "Next" and "Previous" buttons. Use these buttons to move among the questions.
- (2) The "Flag for Review" button. When you aren't sure of your answer, or if you have to guess, click this button to make it easier to return later. (A page in this section, here, explains this machinery.)
- (3) The "Answer Explanation" button. This is only in the Free Practice Test. It's not in the GEDReady test or in the real test, for obvious reasons.
- (4) The Digital Clock. In the GEDReady test and the real test, a digital clock shows how much time you have left. The Free Practice Test doesn't have a clock.
- (5) Calculator Buttons. There are no calculator buttons in the social studies tests. The calculator isn't needed for social studies tests.
