Here are some suggestions about how to skim different kinds of material:
- Shorter Texts. Often there are only a few lines. Notice any labels or titles. Notice how the text is described - as a speech, an excerpt, an editorial, etc.
- Longer Texts. Notice any labels or titles and how each text is described. Notice if there is more than one tab of material. Read the first sentence of each paragraph.
- Graphs, Tables or Maps. Notice any labels, titles, map legends or brief descriptions. In graphs and tables, notice how the numbers are displayed. Notice the shape of any lines or bars. Do they go up or down? Do they peak somewhere?
- Cartoons, Photos, etc. Notice any titles or brief descriptions. Notice the tone or point, if there is one.
- Diagrams. Notice any titles, labels or introductory text. Particularly notice any arrows and what kind of flow they represent. (Diagrams are unusual in this test; they are common in the Science test.)
